On disembarkation day, while we arrived at 8 AM in Reykjavik, we were allowed to leave our luggage on board until 1 PM and come in and out of the ship as we pleased. Our room was out of bounds, of course, but we were allowed to relax in the common areas and enjoy the onboard cafe (Paula’s Pantry) with its specialty hot beverages, treats, sandwiches, and fruit juices until it was time to get to the airport. But as is typical for cruise lines at the high end, Atlas is including a lot in its base price. The guests are also affluent, as expeditions to Antarctica are typically pricey. The staff and crew are friendly and attentive and know your name the minute you arrive on board. They also quickly learn that you drink a low-fat latte in the morning or prefer a glass of dry white wine before dinner. Many of them transferred over from World Navigator, so they were well-trained. Still, everything on board the ship – from the dining venues to the expeditions – was so well run that it seemed as though World Traveller had been at sea for many months and not on its inaugural expedition. For the expedition team, this was the first time they had met as a group, yet they all worked incredibly well together.

World Traveller has an Open Bridge Policy, so passengers are welcome to stop in on Deck 6 forward if the bridge is open. All in all, we found that the culinary focus did give some structure and consistency to days that otherwise focused on the destination, without any other onboard programming.
Design-wise, as noted above, all of the cabins and suites evoke the 1940s with such flourishes as glossy mahogany walls and chrome accents, though the rooms are thoroughly modern. Accents in shades of brown, black and rich greens as well as silvery blues (including green velvet throw pillows and sleek, built-in side shelves covered in stitched tan leather) create a rich and luxuriant aesthetic. Not so successful, at least on our sailing, was the complimentary culinary excursion. Billed as "The Joy of Pesto" and described as a tasting/demo, the event in Porto Venere was held on a passenger ferry, that oddly stayed at dock. Again, the space wasn't set up well for anyone who wasn't right in the front row to see, seating was cramped and the resulting atmosphere was decidedly not joyful (a shame, considering both how gorgeous Porto Venere is and how delicious pesto can be). Atlas has positioned their Mediterranean cruises well, with a special "second guest sails free" sale.
For now, Atlas only is operating a single ship, the 196-passenger World Navigator. But it plans to quickly ramp up in size with the addition of four more vessels over the next three years. But that's what happened earlier this month as new small-ship cruise specialist Atlas Ocean Voyages debuted with its first sailing.
